Has your laptop become a scaled-down desktop PC because the notebook battery only lasts fifteen minutes?notebook battery technology hasn’t changed much, in spite of great advances in computer technology over the last ten years.notebook battery improvement is like teenage sex—everyone talks about it, but nobody has experienced itnotebook batteries.

So how can you prolong notebook battery life? Unfortunately, there are more myths than truths out there, and some of the advice can do more harm than good. The most common myths are:

1. It is necessary to charge the battery 12 hours before first time use.

This is true for the Ni-Lon notebook batteries produced in the past, but it’s a complete waste of time for the newer Li-Lon notebook batteries. Most of the notebook batteries on the market today are Li-Lon, and don’t have much “memory effect.” These notebook batteries have a control board inside that cuts off power when they are fully charged. So even if you charge it 120 hours after it’s full, it won’t do any good. What you should do is nearly deplete the battery (not completely), then recharge it.

2. A new battery must be depleted and charged 3 times in order for it to reach full capacity.

This should be done only if you buy an over-stocked battery that is more than a year old. New notebook batteries sold in stores are charged by the manufacturer when they are ready for shipment. So, the 3 charge cycle only wastes the life of a new notebook battery.

3. A notebook battery should be calibrated at least once a month.

Yes, for the old Ni-Lon batteries—but not for today’s Li-Lon notebook batteries. I am not saying you don’t need to do it, but once a month is not necessary. Calibrate when you notice that the actual use time is much different from what the computer indicates.

4. Calibration can decrease notebook notebook battery capacity.

Calibration means matching the notebook battery charge level your computer detects and reports with the actual charge level. There is a chip in the notebook battery’s control board that knows the notebook battery’s charge level, and calibration is making sure that the chip information is accurately reported by your computer. notebook battery

5. A complete charge cycle is good for the notebook notebook battery.

YOU CAN’T BE MORE WRONG THAN THIS!! Again, for Ni-Lon notebook batteries, which have “memory effect,” this is true. But Li-Lon notebook batteries have little or no memory effect, so a complete re-charge cycle (0~1%) is very damaging. You should recharge when capacity is at 10~15%.

6. When you aren’t going to use the laptop, you need to either deplete the notebook battery or charge it to full.

Both are wrong. It’s best to charge your notebook battery to 40%, then store it in a dark and dry place at a temperature around 20C.

7. You can change the notebook battery cell yourself.

Do you know how much that $130 Dell notebook battery really cost? Trust me; your laptop manufacturer doesn’t want to lose that profit! So what do they do? They install a chip in the computer control board so that if you try to change the notebook battery’s cell it will lock up. Once it’s locked, it’s really hard (if not impossible) to unlock, so your notebook battery become a piece of junk. If you have to change the cell, find a professional company to do it for you. And sometimes it’s not cost effective to change it anyway because there are plenty of third party manufacturers who produce compatible laptop notebook batteries for a reasonable price (compared to the cost of original notebook battery). You can go to this site to find notebook batteries for most laptop brands at a decent price.

Whatever you do, your laptop notebook battery will eventually lose its capacity and die—even if you don’t use it. If you take care of your notebook battery, and use your computer no more than once a week, you may have 60~70% of the original capacity one year later. But if you use your computer every day, the notebook battery will probably not last more than six to ten months. So don’t feel too bad when the notebook battery of your $3,000 laptop starts to die after 8 months. Think of it this way: In 8 months you might need to change computers anyway.
